You’re already doing the work

Hi friends,

This week, Write of Passage is coming to an end. The last 5 weeks have been one of the most transformative learning experiences I’ve ever had. And it all happened online, that’s the truly amazing part. I’ve enrolled in plenty of online courses that I haven’t quite finished, but this one was a whole different thing.

How will I keep the momentum going? I’ve published 5 articles so far and want to see this number go up. I vowed to send you this newsletter every week. And if there’s one thing I absolutely can’t stand, then it’s failing to deliver what I promised I would. To consistency!

Here’s what I want to share with you this week:

My Latest Article

The customer research conundrum: As a copywriter, I’m often faced with a dilemma. My clients want to launch their product or service asap. But to arrive at high converting copy, we need to take the time to thoroughly research their audience. Customer research turns into a heavy lift that often results in little insights when forced into a short timeframe. I’m proposing a new approach. The secret: Leveraging the work you’re already doing

Insightful Reads

Manage Your Leverage to Supercharge Your Productivity by Bryan Lee – How do we get more done in less time? The answer is leverage. Create things that can be used over and over again, establish good habits, and streamline your decision-making.

How to Make Time to Reinvent Yourself by Joe Balcom – “Figure out what it is that you are naturally passionate about, interested in, and good at. Combine it with a medium of your liking. […] Through deep self-expression, self-discovery emerges. And through self-discovery, your self-reinvention process becomes inevitable.”

Your Actionable Copywriting Tip

Make headlines work hard for you

Writing copy takes effort. Isn’t it a welcome break to just plug in a simple “How it works,” “About Us” or “FAQ” for a headline before diving straight back into the weeds? Sure is, but you’re essentially wasting prime real estate. If your readers are going to take in anything, it’s going to be your headlines. So, these should actually carry a message.

Write “On a mission to save cute koala bears “ instead of “About Us”

Write “You’re ready to go in 3 simple steps” instead of “How it works”

Write “Yes, we offer free shipping. Here are more answers to your questions” instead of “FAQ”

Tool of the Week: Video Speed Controller

If there’s one “productivity hack” that has been an absolute game-changer for me, then it’s watching videos on 1.5 the normal speed. I still perfectly understand what’s going on and can always rewind when I’ve missed something. The Video Speed Controller is a Chrome extension that adds an unobtrusive control bar to the upper left corner of any video on screen. Try it out! You’ll never want to go back to normal speed.

Thanks for reading! Thoughts or feedback? I’d love to hear from you!

Tickles,

Julia
