Fresh Start & The Rule of One in Copywriting

Hi friends,

Imagine you had to get rid of 90% of all possessions in your apartment. You had to leave with only a suitcase and a backpack. What would you discard, and what would you keep?

That’s the exercise I’m going through right now as I’m preparing to move from Papua New Guinea to North America next week. And I’m loving it!

I’m realizing quickly that I ultimately don’t need that much stuff. Most of it is superfluous.

It feels great to get a fresh start!

Now to what I want to share with you this week…

The Rule of One: Get clear on this before writing any piece of copy

So, you’ve got something to sell. And now, you need to write that landing page, the email, or the ad that will hopefully *fingerscrossed* close the deal with your prospects.

Where do you start? A blank page is never a good idea. So, here’s what to fill your Google Doc with. I want to show you the 6 elements you need to clarify before you get to the actual writing part. Having these figured out will let the words flow way more easily.

Includes a real-life example.

Your Actionable Copywriting Tip

Avoid “word-shaped air”

That’s the term Copyhackers’ Joanna Wiebe coined for meaningless buzzwords in copy like passion, innovation, leadership, execution … you get the idea.

These cliches are so overused by now, they’ll mean nothing to your prospects. Every entrepreneur is, by default, kinda innovative when they’ve created a solution to a problem. And nobody doubts that you’re passionate about (or at least interested in) what you do.

So, these words (together with cutting-edge and state-of-the-art) are now officially banned from your copy.

What should you use instead? Think about how these traits actually benefit your customers. And write that down.

Tool of the Week: The Most Dangerous Writing App

If you suffer from serious writer’s block, then this app will cure it…fast. How? As soon as you stop typing for more than a few seconds, the app starts to delete your progress. It’s meant to “shut down your inner editor and get you into a state of flow.” I tried it once, and it stressed me out! But it’s kinda fun, too. Would love to hear about your experience.

Quote of the Week

Develop the habit of letting small bad things happen. If you don’t, you’ll never find time for the life-changing big things.”
