Flying during the pandemic & lessons learned from living in PNG

Hi friends,

Flying internationally during a pandemic was quite an experience. If you ever wondered what it’s like to be alone in an entire airport, now’s the time to find out. I hung out at Brisbane Airport for almost 8 hours waiting for my connection with nothing else but vending machine food.

Qatar Airways was spot on in their in-flight video saying that it feels like everything has changed, yet nothing has changed. They did a fantastic job connecting with the passengers’ sentiment and putting everyone at ease with the new situation. I’m trying to find this video online because it’s truly a masterpiece in corporate communication.

So, I’ve arrived safely in the US, and here’s what I want to share with you this week…

6 lessons learned from living 4 years in Papua New Guinea

I landed in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea, on the 1st of January 2017. It was the first move for me to a developing country. Unsurprisingly, I suffered from quite a culture shock when I arrived. The 9th of October 2020 marked the day I left PNG for good. Now is the perfect time to reflect on what I hated and loved about living and working there and the lessons I’ve learned.

Your Actionable Copywriting Tip

Don’t make people click

How many pages should your website have? Ideally, as few as possible.

Here’s the thing… whenever your visitor needs to click to see more information, it creates a bit of friction. Even the small delay of loading another page could be enough to lose them.

Scrolling is easier than clicking. Just observe your own behavior on websites for a bit, and you’ll notice that’s true.

Tweet of the Week

This tweet got a surprising amount of traction and resulted in some interesting discussions in the comments.

The commenters fell mainly in 3 categories:

  • Freelancers and entrepreneurs who strongly agreed
  • Employees who strongly disagreed
  • Employees who agreed but can’t leave their jobs for various reasons

I feel for the people in the last category. Everyone should get the chance to freely decide how they want to earn their living.
