Build a business not a website & why you need a Second Brain

Hi friends,

I got great news last week! I’m going to be one of 20 alumni mentors in the upcoming cohort of Building a Second Brain, which starts on August 31st.

Part of the mentor application was sharing how BASB has impacted me personally. Here’s what I wrote:

Like most of us, I’m consuming tons of information on a daily basis. In the hope to learn and improve, I’ve started to take online courses. And even though I got valuable insights, this knowledge seemed to always slip through my fingers. It was an enigma for me how people could come up with so many great ideas and produce new output so fast.

With my second brain, I feel like I’ve gained a superpower. Everything I learn is conserved for my future self to use just when she needs it. I have the peace of mind that nothing slips through the cracks.

I believe BASB should be taught in every school and university. As knowledge workers, we are so not prepared to handle the amount of information we’re exposed to. BASB is absolutely essential to succeed in the modern world. It gives me the confidence and tools to take on anything I want to. No project feels too big. I want to share this new superpower with as many people as possible.

It would be awesome to meet you in the course. You can sign up here until the 24th of August.

Here’s what I want to share with you this week:

Business Blunders #1: Jumping the gun on developing your website

I’m lucky to get to talk to ambitious people who are building new exciting products and services almost every day. This is the first article of a series that will explore the mistakes that I see entrepreneurs making and how to avoid them.

You’ve probably been told that you need a professional website to start a business. While diving into website development keeps you busy, it’s not real progress. Here’s what you actually need to do first.

Your Actionable Copywriting Tip

How to make your buttons more enticing for people to click

When coming up with the call-to-action to put on your buttons on your website or landing page, most people resort to standards like “Download,” “Sign up,” “Learn more.” This sounds not only very dry and boring but also like work.

Instead, think of your call-to-action as a call-to-value. What will they really get when they click on the button?

To write your button copy, continue the sentence “I want to….”

For example: I want to generate more leads. I want to get fit and healthy. I want to take control of my business.

Then, drop the “I want to” and you have your button copy.

For example: Generate more leads. Get fit and healthy. Take control of your business.

Tool of the Week: ChilledCow Lo-Fi Hip Hop Radio

This is my go-to music when writing. Super chill, but engaging enough to not fall asleep. It’s available on Spotify and Apple Music as well.
