Hi friends,
After mentoring a few hundred students in courses like Write of Passage, Building a Second Brain, and On Deck Course Creator, I know one thing…
Breakthroughs come from conversations.
Just yesterday, a student came into my Write of Passage mentor session confused about the next assignment. By the time it ended he not only knew what he wanted to write about, he had enough ideas for several articles.
All it took was admitting that he was stuck. Immediately, multiple people offered their perspectives and helped him clarify his thinking.
I’ve seen this happen again and again, and it always lights my heart up.
So, if you’re feeling stuck, I bet you know people who would be more than happy to hop on a call and talk it through with you.
You just have to ask!
(Also, I’m here for you, too. If you have a question, just hit reply.)
Now, here’s what I want to share with you this week.

Weird Copywriting Tip:

Use broken sentences in your copy.
Start sentences with words like "and” or "but"
It's easier to read.
And easier to understand.
But more importantly:
It makes them keep reading.

Case studies: Why you need them and how to create them
Your most successful customers are the ultimate marketing engine. But only if you share their success story publicly. That’s exactly what case studies are for. Here’s an easy 3-part structure to create them.
🤓 Online Courses
Great courses aren't great because of the information they provide.

Salient, useful information is table stakes.
Great courses are great because they provide outcomes, accountability, process, and community.
There are so many great courses and communities launching right now! Here are the ones you should know about this week:
Minimum Viable Video: Get confident, comfortable, and competent in front of the camera, and master the 21st-century skill called video. Enrollment is open now, and the course starts on October 11th.
Course of Action: Become a superstar teacher! Andrew Barry launched a new course to help course creators build an audience, validate their idea, and develop a strong offer.
Edupreneur: Ish Baid and Will Mannon launched a new community for anyone building cohort-based courses. Big fan of these guys!
Ship 30 for 30: The last cohort of the year starts in October. If you want to build a daily writing habit, click here to get $50 off (aff).

Take a deep breath. Pause. Take another deep breath.

Recruiting is broken. Here’s how to fix it
I wrote this essay to get something off my chest: Most organizations suck at recruiting. Their hiring process is a mess, and they fail to treat their candidates with the respect and dignity they deserve. (This doesn’t have anything to do with what I usually write about, but I feel better that I got this out of my head.)
Still in launch mode,

PS: I’ve been staying in the Leslieville neighborhood of Toronto for a couple of days.
Many houses here have little glowing hearts in their windows to signal that hate has no place here.
I think that’s really cool!
